Tongue Tie and Breastfeeding

The oral anatomy of newborns can vary, and common congenital issues such as ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) and other types of oral restrictions can cause difficulties in the breastfeeding relationship of the dyad. This course is based on data collected over 12 years of experience and analyzes the impact on breastfeeding and the effects of frenulotomy interventions, It offers a unique perspective on the identification, breastfeeding management, and surgical treatment of tongue tie. The course covers observation and identification of a short frenulum, the identification and management of alterations it causes in breastfeeding when untreated, presents the techniques and results of the intervention, discusses family support before and after the procedure, and how to facilitate an informed and conscious decision regarding the intervention, considering the potential risks and benefits.

Note on language

The term ” tongue tie“, is the translation of the Greek “ankyloglossia” which is used to mean a tongue that is “tied“. In most cases, a “tied tongue” is due to a “restricted frenulumo“. The “frenulum” is a normal anatomical structure and is always present (except in some rare genetic variations), but it can display different morphologies and, in some cases, become the cause of restricted tongue movements. The author will describe in depth how the expression “tongue tie” is often poorly defined in research and common language, and how a better definition is essential to clarity and the advancement of our understanding of the subject.
