Strategies for Breastfeeding Babies with Altered Muscle Tone

Hypotonic or hypertonic infants are more likely to have feeding difficulties as a result of these alterations of normal mu scle activation. This talk starts with the description of different conditions that can cause altered muscle tone, and the differentiation between postural and phasic muscle tone. In the second part the author shares her strategies to manage feeding in hyp otonic and hypertonic infants, whatever their underlying condition.

In this presentation Catherine Watson Genna, a world renowned IBCLC, expert in sucking issues, describes the impact that altered muscle tone can have on infant feeding and shares some strategies to manage both hypertonic and hypotonic infants.

[ENG] Catherine Watson Genna, BS, IBCLC, RLC, has been an IBCLC in private practice in NYC since 1992. She has a special interest in the anatomical, genetic and neurological influences on infant sucking skills, and writes and speaks internationally on these topics. Her current research projects involve investigating the biomechanics of the lactating nipple, analyzing infant sucking via ultrasound, and studying suck: swallow rhythms using cervical auscultation. She is the author of Supporting Sucking Skills in Breastfeeding Infants (Jones and Bartlett Learning, 2008, 2013, 2017, 2022) and Selecting and Using Breastfeeding Tools (Hale Publishing, 2009; Praeclarus Press, 2016) and has served as a founding Associate Editor of the USLCA journal, Clinical Lactation, for 7 years.
